On Thursday evening, 19 September 2024, I had the privilege of photographing the South Africa vs Spain women’s rugby match at the iconic DHL Stadium in Cape Town. It was a moment I had long dreamed of — standing fieldside, camera in hand, ready to capture the electric energy of this thrilling encounter. In a field traditionally dominated by men, being one of the three female photographers there made the experience even more special.

The stadium buzzed with anticipation. The cold wind swept across the field, but it didn’t dampen the atmosphere or our spirits. Positioned behind the dead-ball line, we had an unrivalled view of the game’s most defining moments — the hard-hitting tackles, the fleeting moments of triumph, and the sheer determination etched on every player’s face.

A standout moment for me was capturing Libby Janse van Rensburg’s historic achievement, as she reached her 200-point milestone for the Springboks Women. Documenting such significant accomplishments, especially by strong, independent women, is something I am deeply passionate about. From the players on the field to TV presenters like Cato Louw adding her expertise to the broadcast, every woman involved in the game is inspiring the next generation — the little girls eagerly waiting for autographs on the sidelines, and those watching from home.

As women in sports, we are “standing on the shoulders of those who came before us.” This historic night reminded me that every step forward we take is a tribute to those who paved the way. It was my first time photographing an international rugby fixture — but it’s certainly not the last.

Here’s to strong women: May we know them. May we be them. May we raise them.
