Cape Town Carnival 2024’s theme was LEKKER.
The creative energy that is present in Cape Town was clear on the day of the carnival. A buzzing of activity, bright colours, laughter and excitement filled the day. The happenings and people behind the scenes with all the hard work that makes the carnival great.
The Cape Town Carnival was launched in 2010 and it has become a popular platform for community arts and culture, self-expression and wacky art. The Cape Town Carnival brings together people from all walks of live to experience and celebrate the energy and creativity of the people of Cape Town. “The Cape Town Town Carnival event is so much fun and it isn’t just a one-day spectacle that pops up and then disappears. It bring together creative artists, voluntary performing groups and leads, an array of diverse individuals who give their all to wow us on event day. We have built an incredible network of community leaders and give voice to a wide variety of communities.” says Prof Rachel Jafta, The Cape Town Carnival Chairperson.
43 Groups from across the Western Cape participated in the parade with over 1500 performers.
Behind the scenes a flurry of activity and coordination took place to ensure the Carnivals success. The backstage area was buzzing with excitement. Sewing machines lined up with costume rails filled with bright dazzling costumes, performers lining up to get their costume allocated, fitted and adjusted if needed. Cape Town Carnival costume department was set for any item to be fixed or adjusted. Freshly spray painted shoes where being dried in front of the big fan, velcro for skirts glued on, and seems being trimmed and hemmed. A buzz of excitement. Each performer radiated with joy and smiles filled the dressing rooms.
Months of meticulous planning, rehearsals, and collaboration among organizers, artists, volunteers, and sponsors culminated in the dazzling spectacle witnessed by thousands. Creative teams worked tirelessly on float designs, costume creations, and choreography, infusing each element with cultural significance and artistic flair. Logistics teams managed everything from road closures to sound systems, ensuring a seamless experience for participants and spectators alike. The behind-the-scenes efforts truly reflected the dedication, passion, and teamwork that bring the Cape Town Carnival to life year after year.
