Follow Your HeART: A Photographer’s View from the Cape Town Carnival Launch
On a windswept January afternoon, Cape Town reminded us why she dances even when the world feels unsteady. High above the city, inside the Media24 building, the launch of the 2026 Cape Town Carnival unfolded as a living, breathing preview of what awaits us in March. Outside, the wind tugged at the skyline. Inside, colour, movement and laughter filled the room.
From a photographer’s perspective, it was impossible not to feel it immediately: this was not just a media launch, it was a moment of intention. Sequins caught the light mid-laugh. Feathered headpieces brushed the air. Bare feet and glittering heels shared the same stage. Every frame carried energy — not posed, not restrained, but joy in motion.
The room gathered a powerful mix of voices and visionaries, including Western Cape Premier Alan Winde and City of Cape Town Mayor Geordin Hill-Lewis, alongside this year’s Carnival Champions and creatives who shape the city’s cultural heartbeat. Yet what stood out most wasn’t status — it was presence. Performers welcomed guests not as spectators, but as participants in something shared.
As the programme unfolded, Prof Rachel Jafta, Chair of the Cape Town Carnival Trust, spoke words that resonated deeply behind the lens. She described the Carnival as a joyful antidote to a world that feels increasingly onderstebo. In times of uncertainty, she reminded us, creativity becomes an act of resilience. Community becomes an anchor. Joy becomes essential.
This year’s theme, Follow Your HeART, is more than a slogan — it’s a pulse you can feel. It lives in the careful beadwork stitched by hand. In the strength of dancers mid-leap, muscles taut, expressions radiant. In the quiet focus backstage and the explosive release when music hits the floor. The heart is visible everywhere if you look closely enough.
Through my camera, the launch revealed itself in fragments:
a flash of gold heels on a dark stage floor,
a sequinned bodice catching a beam of light,
a dancer suspended mid-air, defying gravity for a heartbeat longer than expected,
a crowd leaning forward, drawn into the rhythm.
These are not just performance images — they are portraits of belief. Belief in art. Belief in the city. Belief in the power of showing up fully as yourself.
On 21 March, that belief will spill into the streets of Green Point as 1 500 performers bring the 16th Cape Town Carnival to life. Twelve Champions, countless creators, and an entire city invited to follow its heart — openly, boldly, together.
The Cape Town Carnival is free, open to all, and deeply rooted in connection. It is a reminder that beauty is not passive. It is built — step by step, beat by beat, hand in hand.
If this launch was any indication, March will not simply be watched. It will be felt.
