Bellhouse – Peerutin Karol Architects

Photographing architecture is never only about documenting a building. It is about noticing how the structure responds to light, how the materials work together and how one space leads into another.

Designed by Cape Town architectural practice Peerutin Karol, 8 Bellwood is a five-storey apartment building in Fresnaye, completed in 2021. The development replaced a single residence with five apartments, each occupying its own floor, together with ground-floor parking and a communal swimming pool.

What interested me while photographing the building was the balance between its strong contemporary geometry and the warmth introduced through its materials. Rendered surfaces, tiles and expanses of glass are softened by timber flooring and external timber ceilings. The open-plan living areas extend towards large sliding doors and wrap-around terraces, drawing the eye beyond the interiors and towards the surrounding city and landscape.

The building is substantial, but it does not present itself as one heavy, uninterrupted form. Changes in depth, texture and material break up the façades and create a sense of rhythm across the different levels. Photographing these relationships—between solid and open, interior and exterior, shadow and reflected light—became central to telling the visual story of the project.

For me, successful architectural photography should communicate more than what a building looks like. It should offer some sense of how the architecture feels and how it might be experienced by the people who move through it.
